FAQ
Your questions, answered.
You bet. We believe that access to a map should be a fundamental right of every firefighter. With a basic user account you will have 2 GB of space available to you and will be able to view and modify any map that gets shared with you. But for those who need extra storage, advanced functionality, and reporting capabilities? We've got you. See our pricing page for details or contact us for more information.
All of the data you upload and maps you create will be hosted in your home country. You will always have control of your data and should you want it removed, it will be permanently deleted from our systems.
Nova Maps is compatible with any drone you want or have, as long as it can fly and carry your payload. Nova Maps also works on any operating system you use as long as you have an internet browser.
Sensors:
Nova Maps aims to be universally compatible with every IR sensor type, and if yours isn't working, send us a message. We'll get right on it. Requests including a link to the images that you're trying to process will help us figure it out significantly quicker!
Great question. Big teams mean lots of data and even more storage. Contact us to see which packages will work best for you and your team. Paid plans include onboarding, setup, and training to help you get off the ground.
All map features like hotspots and polygons that you create using Nova Maps will be available for export for further use in any GIS software that you want.
To fly your drone over wildfires, you will need a few different things, and the requirements vary in Canada and the USA.
In Canada, you will need:
- To be a person who is operating an aircraft at the request of, or with the authorization of, an appropriate fire control authority to assist the fire control authority in the conduct of its operations.
- An Advanced Drone Pilots License.
- A Special Flight Operations Certificate.
Wondering how you can get an advanced pilot's license? Luckily for you, we also have a training company and can walk you through the whole process.
Take our Advanced training course with our Transport Canada Certified Instructors at FlySmart Training before taking the Transport Canada Small Advanced Exam, then book your flight review through our network of flight reviewers (you get a 25% discount by taking our advanced course)!
If you're in the US you will need:
- To be part of an agency that’s involved in the firefighting operation or have received a special exemption from the FAA.
- A valid Part 107 License.
Note: In both Canada and the USA, there are significant fines and penalties for unapproved drones flying anywhere over or near wildfires. Ensure you heavily research local and federal laws and regulations and never fly without approval!
Lucky for you, we have Sample Hotspot and Orthomosaic data that you can download right from our website and upload into Nova Maps. Access it here.
