Nova’s Hands-On Drone Training with Colorado DFPC & South Dakota Wildland Fire
Earlier this month, we had the privilege of working alongside the Colorado Division of Fire Prevention & Control (DFPC) and South Dakota Wildland Fire (SDWF) in Custer, South Dakota for an intensive, hands-on drone training session.
Designed to enhance UAS data collection, processing, and real-time decision-making, this two-day training ensured both teams are fully prepared for the challenges of the 2025 wildland fire season.
Training That Translates to Real-World Impact
Our approach to drone training is straightforward: empower teams with practical knowledge and real-world application. There is no time for complicated workflows and unnecessary steps when a fire is on the move; that’s why our sessions focus on:
Photogrammetry & Infrared Data Analysis – Understanding how to capture, process, and interpret critical aerial data.
Mission Planning & Operational Strategy – Ensuring efficient drone mapping training and UAS deployment during active incidents.
Field Exercises & Live UAS Operations – Simulating initial attack fire mapping, automated hotspot scanning, and real-time video collection for situational awareness.
Even in -27°F conditions, the teams remained focused, adapting to new tools and operational processes with the same determination they bring to the fireline. And their efforts paid off—shortly after training, SDWF deployed their UAS to two active fires, applying the skills they had just refined to map perimeters and provide real-time intelligence to incident commanders.
Why Hands-On Drone Training Matters
For agencies integrating UAS into their response strategies, software alone isn't enough. The ability to confidently collect, process, and act on aerial data is what makes the difference in the field. That’s why we prioritize hands-on training for emergency responders—ensuring teams aren’t just equipped with technology but fully prepared to use it effectively under pressure.
We’re grateful for the opportunity to work alongside Colorado DFPC and South Dakota Wildland Fire, and we look forward to seeing their programs continue to grow!
