Junior Designer

Victoria, BC (In-office)

Nova Maps is a BC-based tech company that’s been helping detect and fight wildfires since 2015. We build tools that make a real-world impact—and we care deeply about doing it well. Our team is tight-knit, talented, and always pushing to do better.

We’re looking for a Junior Designer to join our Victoria office. This is a great role for someone early in their career who’s ready to learn, contribute, and grow in a fast-moving environment. You’ll be supported by a design team that’s collaborative and curious, and you’ll have the freedom to take ownership, experiment, and make things better.

We’re not big on hierarchy or hand-holding. We are big on initiative, craft, and creating thoughtful design that works.

What You’ll Be Doing

You’ll work closely with our marketing and design teams to create clear, consistent, and engaging visuals. That includes:

  • Designing for marketing—social graphics, brochures, email templates, presentation decks

  • Helping evolve and refine the visual identity across our brands: Hummingbird, FlySmart, and Nova

  • Collaborating on website design, landing pages, and other digital experiences

  • Creating internal and external documents that are beautifully designed and easy to understand

  • Organizing and maintaining brand assets, templates, and style guides

While this role is primarily focused on marketing and brand design, we’re also looking for someone who’s comfortable working in product design—specifically UI/UX—and is proficient in Figma.

What to Expect in Your First 3 Months

You’ll hit the ground running, but you won’t be doing it alone. In your first few months, you’ll:

  • Get to know our brands and how we communicate visually

  • Work on a wide range of projects with guidance and support from the design team

  • Participate in design reviews and get comfortable presenting your work

  • Start to take ownership of projects and propose your own solutions

  • Learn how things move around here: fast, collaborative, and sometimes a little chaotic—in the best way

What We’re Looking For

You’re a designer who’s got solid skills—but you’re still hungry to learn. Your work speaks for itself. You care about clarity, consistency, and craft. You’re curious, proactive, and not afraid to speak up with an idea—or ask for help when you need it.

We're looking for someone who:

Is proficient with Figma and Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign)

  • Has an excellent portfolio showing strong design skills across multiple media (Web, social, and print)

  • Understands basic principles of UI/UX and can design user-friendly interfaces

  • Can manage multiple projects and communicate openly about timelines and priorities

  • Is comfortable explaining their design decisions and open to critique and feedback

  • Wants to grow in a fast-moving environment where high standards are the norm

  • A love for simple, effective design that puts the user first

Bonus Points

You don’t need all of these, but they’ll definitely help:

  • Experience with light motion graphics or animation

  • Familiarity with Squarespace or Framer

  • Have experience designing for B2B brands or technology companies.

Why Work With Us

We think this is a pretty special place to work. Here's why:

  • You’ll be part of a mission-driven company doing work that matters

  • You'll have creative freedom and the mentorship to grow your skills

  • You’ll work with a fun, talented, and supportive team that’s genuinely excited to be here

  • The office energy is high (music’s always playing), and collaboration is constant

  • There are dogs. Really good dogs.

Perks & Benefits

Competitive salary, plus health & dental benefits

  • Flexible paid vacation + extra time off during the holidays

  • A vibrant office in Victoria, with the option to work from home when needed

  • Flexible work hours and a team that trusts you to get things done

How to Apply

To apply, please send us:

  • A link to your online portfolio

  • A cover letter telling us why you think you’d be a great fit for this role and team

  • And answer these two quick questions:

    1. What’s one brand (big or small) that you think has a really strong visual identity—and what makes it work?

    2. If we walked past your desk, what kind of music would be playing?
